Reporters are supposed to be hard-eyed, skeptical, even cynical, but those qualities frequently turn out to be armor against facts, theories or ideas that step outside of conventional wisdom.
Admittedly, it’s hard to keep lofty ideas in mind when payrolls are being whacked and newspapers are changing hands like Monopoly properties. And it’s hard to bring a contrarian perspective to an issue that vested interests have coopted, putting their own institutional gloss on the subject. But good journalism—the kind of journalism we point to when asked to explain why the press deserves special protection—has always come down to individual reporters describing the world in unflinching and unvarnished terms. Everything else in the news business isn’t journalism; it’s business.
